CONCLUSION: The results showed that perineal massage with Lavender essence in second stage of labour decreases incidence of episiotomy and degree of laceration. Lavender essence may increase blood flow, elasticity, softness, and relaxation of the perineal tissue.
I wish I had known this before Olivia was born or I sure would have prepared a Lavender essence by taking Young Living's Lavender essential oil and diluting it by mixing 10 drops with 50 drops of Young Living's V-6 vegetable mixing oil.
53 first time mother's had NO TEAR if they had used lavender vs only 2 first time mother's in the control group.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Perineal trauma particularly from routine episiotomy that is associated with short and long term morbidity for women. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of perineal massage with lavender essence on episiotomy and laceration.
METHODS: This clinical trial study was performed on 176 nulliparous women who referred to Arak Talghani teaching center for normal delivery. They were randomly participating in massage with lavender essence oil (91 cases) or control group (85 cases). In lavender group when they progressed to full dilation of the cervix, the midwife inserted two fingers inside vagina and using a sweeping motion gently stretch the perineum with lavender essence oil 5 up to 10 minutes, in and between mother's pushing in second stage of labor. In control group just Ritgen Maneuver was applied. At last we compared the rate of intact perineum, episiotomy, and laceration, mean duration of second stage of labour and Apgar scores in 1st and 5th minute between two groups.
FINDINGS: In case group, intact perineum, episiotomy, and laceration were: 60.2% (53), 8% (7), and 31.8% (31) respectively. In control group, intact perineum, episiotomy, and laceration were: 2.4% (2), 80% (68) and 17.6% (15) respectively. This difference was statistcally significant (p=0.0001). In Lavender essence group, first and second degree laceration were (27.5% (27) and 4.5% (4) respecitvely. Third and fourth degree laceration were not occurred. In control group, first, second, and third degree laceration were 4.6% (4), 7.1% (6) and 5.9% (5) respectively, fourth degree laceration was not occurred. Difference was statistcially significant (p=0.0001)

Sensitivities to Essential Oils

There are a couple of ways one can be sensitive to essential oils, but an allergic reaction is not one of them. Allergies are erroneous immune responses to proteins, peptides, and amino acids - all nitrogen compounds, none of which are found in essential oils.
You can have an allergic reaction to a vegetable oil such as olive, corn, peanut, walnut, almond, etc., since these are cold pressed and can contain small amounts of proteins. For example, occasionally a person can develop an allergy to an oil blend such as Valor, which is sold by Young Living. The allergy is not due to the essential oils of spruce, frankincense, rosewood, and blue tansy in the blend. It is due to the almond oil in the blend. So read your labels. What may appear to be an allergic reaction to a blend of essential oils may be due to a carrier oil contained in the blend.
You can also have an allergic reaction to citrus oils which are cold pressed from the rind. However, while we refer to citrus oils such as orange, lemon, lime, and grapefruit as "essential oils," strictly speaking they are not. By definition, a true essential oil must be steam distilled, not expressed.
There are also oils extracted by solvents such as onycha, jasmine, and neroli. Strictly speaking, they too are not true essential oils. Technically, they should be called absolutes, not essential oils. One can have a true allergic reaction to these because, like the citrus oils, they have not passed through a distillation process and can contain traces of proteins, peptides, or amino acids.
Because of the nature of distillation by heat, steam, and water, that true essential oils must undergo, they do not contain the necessary compounds to trigger allergies because these compounds do not pass through the distillation process.
Hence, sensitivities to essential oils, in the sense of allergic reactions, are not possible. Allergic sensitivities are due to the body developing antibodies in response to certain nitrogenous molecules. No one has ever found antibodies in humans from essential oils. So if one has a reaction to an essential oil, it is something else. Not an allergy.

Hot Oils
There are oils that are naturally hot, such as oregano, thyme, mountain savory, cinnamon, cassia, and a few others. This is because of their phenolic compound content which cleanses our cells and paves the way to healing. Such oils can be taken internally via capsules or applied to the skin directly with caution or diluted with a fatty oil.
If burning or irritation occurs to the skin from such oils, prompt application of a vegetable oil layered over the essential oil will take care of the problem in short order.
The same thing applies if you get an essential oil in your eyes or if you swallow a hot oil, like oregano, and it burns your mouth and throat. Don't use water; use a vegetable oil for immediate relief. Pour it directly in the eyes or take it orally if your mouth or throat is affected.
Detox Reactions
As for sensitivities to essential oils that produce a skin rash or other allergic-like symptoms such as headaches or nausea, this is always a detox reaction. While allergic reactions get worse and worse with each exposure to the offending substance (allergen), detox reactions eventually get less and less severe with each exposure to an essential oil until it disappears completely once the toxins are cleared from the system.
When one has a detox reaction from an essential oil (which is a good thing), they need to back off from using oils for a while and increase their water intake and, perhaps, get into a cleansing routine for a month or so, going light on the use of essential oils for a while. What is happening in this kind of sensitivity is that the oils are detoxing too rapidly for the colon and kidneys to handle so the toxins come out through the skin as the third avenue for excretion. It is better to keep the rate of detox down to levels that are flushed out through the kidneys and colon, if possible.
Emotional Sensitivities
In rare cases, a person can react to a perfectly pure therapeutic grade essential oil as if it were an allergen or a toxin, but in reality the response is neither an allergy nor a detox. It is something else.
Another kind of sensitivity to essential oils has to do with emotions. In cases of extreme unresolved grief, which can be due to the loss of a loved one or other circumstances, one can become sensitive to anything, even the most harmless of things. In extreme cases, people can become universal responders, reacting to almost everything in what appears to be an allergic reaction. This malady is sometimes referred to as "Extreme Chemical Sensitivity" (ECS) or "Environmental Illness" (EI).
In such cases, some people have been known to react in an allergy-like fashion to even the purest of essential oils, such as those sold by Young Living. But healing from such an illness does not come by treating it as an allergy, because it is not an allergy in the classical sense. It is a spiritual-emotional disease and must be dealt with at that level.
The spiritual and symbolic message in this sort of reaction is that the individual is so depressed, unhappy, and unwilling to accept life as it has been given to them that they are rejecting all of creation and, thus, react negatively to everything. There is a scriptural reference to this in Proverbs 17:22, "A broken spirit dries the bones."
The basis of our immune system is in the marrow of the bones where the T-cells and other white corpuscles are formed. Allergies and other environmental or chemical sensitivities are due to malfunctions of the immune system at the level of the white corpuscles (leucocytes). Hence, this Bible verse is actually referring to a negative autoimmune response originating in the bones caused by an individual's rejection of the world around them stemming from extreme grief or a broken spirit.
The solution to this spiritually rooted illness is to recognize the source of the grief, accept it, and deal with it. When that is done, the sensitivities disappear, usually within a few days and sometimes overnight. Applying selected essential oils for emotional purposes can assist in revealing and releasing the buried feelings that underlie such a malady.
Adulterated Oils
There is one other source of sensitivity that may be blamed on essential oils and that has to do with perfume and food grade oils. True therapeutic grade essential oils are grown organically, harvested in proper ways and times, distilled gently at minimum temperatures and pressures, and bottled without any ingredients removed or added. All of the essential oils sold by Young Living are therapeutic grade oils. However, the vast majority of aromatic oils sold in retail stores and other places are perfume or food grade oils.
A true therapeutic grade essential oil contains hundreds of compounds, all of which are necessary in a proper balance for them to possess healing power. Since only a few of these compounds contribute significantly to aroma and/or taste, when essential oils are used for fragrances or flavors, the only compounds that matter to commercial users are the ones that have smell or taste. In some cases, this involves only 2 or 3 compounds in an oil, and the manufacturers and users don't care if these compounds are natural or synthetic so long as the smell and taste are there and the cost is cheap.
Hence, fragrance and food grade oils are always incomplete in their composition, containing only part of the chemical profile of a complete therapeutic grade oil. Furthermore, they are usually adulterated with synthetic compounds or diluted with petrochemicals to increase their volume and profitability.
One can have reactions to such oils, but these are not reactions to true essential oils. Such reactions are due to the adulterants in the oil. They are not caused by the natural essential oil components of the oil.

Clary Sage Essential Oil
I'd like to talk about Clary Sage esssential oil. This oil is my #1 oil that I would want with me while giving birth. While pregnant I read so many stories of women who had very long labors - 36 - 48 hours or sometimes more. I read about women who started out doing fine but then stalled, say dilated ok to 5 centimeters and then for 3 - 4 hours or more there was no progress. Sometimes women were doing Ok, but then their waters broke and hospitals put moms on a 24 hour clock after that with concern that the mom would get an infection. A lot of these women wanted natural child birth but were undermined due to the length of their labors and some disheartened at the slow progress of their labor. I know I read one woman who labored at home for 24 hours, her pressure waves were every 3-4 minutes. She wanted to show up at the hospital dilated to 7 cm or more and was deflated when she was only dilated to 2 cm.
I have no idea why these things happen. Sometimes I read that it's the baby's positioning, once it was a short umbilical cord that was preventing the baby from descending.
But what if the baby is in an OK position? And there is no other issue?
I remember Gary Young telling a story of a woman in Ecuador. Gary was helping on rounds at an Equadoran hospital when he encountered a women that had labored long. The doctors had left and were preparing for a c-section. Gary asked this woman if she wanted Gary to apply an oil that might help deliver the baby now. She consented and Gary applied Clary Sage oil. When the doctors returned to bring her into the operating room for her c-section, she had completely dilated and was ready to push. Gary called Clary Sage oil 'Nature's Pitocin.' When I heard this story, I knew Clary Sage would be an oil I wanted with me at my birthing time.
From my personal use, I applied a few drops of Clary Sage on my ankles after my water broke. I also took 4 drops which I placed in a capsule and swallowed. Dilation was at 5 cm prior to application of Clary Sage. 35 minutes later, I was dilated to 10 cm and complete.
With this experience, I wanted to share this oil with all pregnant women in the hopes that many more women can have better births.

Olivia's Birth Story
I enjoyed meeting the doulas at Unity Hospital this morning and realized that I hadn't shared Olivia's birth story on this blog yet. The birth of Olivia was amazing and I love talking about it every chance I can get. It was beautiful and powerful and I wish it was all on video. Here's the short story:
3:00 pm. week 40 doctor appt.
Doctor Ney from Minnesota Perinatal was my doctor for this appointment and she strongly suggested that I go to the hospital for cervidil induction due to raised blood pressure, possible undiagnosed cholestasis of pregnancy and I suspect they had an unspoken policyof not letting gestational diabetic moms go past 40 weeks. I asked for my bishop score* which was a 7, dilated to2 cm. I agreed to go to the hospital. Abbott Northwestern Hospital.
6:00 pm. Cervidil placed while I was at 3 cm, so already +1 cm in three hours without cervidil. I was experiencing very gentle easy pressure waves. [Pressure waves are Hypnobabies word for contractions] .
Met with Dr Burrus who was sure that there would be a shift change before Olivia made her appearance. He would be wrong.
6:30 p.m. Ate chicken dinner
8:00 p.m. put on my Hypnobabies Easy First Stage script, turned out the lights and fell asleep
1:30 a.m. Woke up to use bathroom. Water broke, progressed to 5 cm, steady and more intense pressure waves. Cervidil removed.
Took Young Living's Clary Sage essential oil, 4 drops in capsule and also applied topically over ankles.
Took capsule of Gary Young's pain formula that I had pre-mixed and brought with me.
I was no longer able to sleep but very comfortable through pressure waves. I was most comfortable standing between waves and when the pressure wave started, I sat in Cleon’s (my husband's) lap going very loose and limp.
2:15 a.m. doula Jessie arrived and had me rechecked. 10 cm and complete.
3:55 a.m. Olivia was born. 20 1/2", 8lb 6oz.
I was thankful that the nursing staff and Dr Burrus followed my birth plan as closely as possible. They all pretty much left me alone thinking that I was going to take hours and hours given that I was older and this was my first baby. The nurses were very helpful, keeping quiet and leaving me alone with my husband and doula Jessie. I was never asked my pain level nor offered pain medication as per my request.
Between cervadil placement and Olivia's birth was less than 10 hours and seven of those 10 hours I spent time eating dinner and sleeping.
Between water breaking and Olivia's birth was just under 2 1/2 hours.
This was my first birth. I admit to being over 40 years old.

Young Living Convention - Part 1 - Sacred Frankincense

I typed up my notes and while I find them fascinating, I'm sure that many of you don't have time to glean the extremely IMPRESSIVE news in this, Part #1, post. So I'll bring some of the comments up front here and keep them in context below. If you are intrigued, you can read the entire post. Study has shown: Frankincense kills cancer cells and does not negatively affect healthy cells. Frankincense identifies cancer cells, liquifies and ejects them from tissue.
As shown in the documentary, Frankincense successfully treated equine (horse) squamous cell cancer, which was untreatable by the usual methods of chemo, radiation or surgery.
Cancer, arthritis and periodontal disease are relatively unknown in Oman and Yemen because the population has daily access to luban (frankincense).
In last September 2009, Gary Young was in intense pain from his logging accident decades ago when he broke 16 vertebra and has 11 degenerated disks. The doctors told him he would be in a wheelchair within six months due to the bone spurs pressing on his spinal cord. Read what he did to treat this with Frankincense oil and became pain-free in five weeks.
Frankincense, Myrrh and Balsam Fir were the 1st 3 oils dating back 10,000 years. [Discussion revolved around gold and the possibility that what was mentioned as Gold or Liquid Gold given as one of the gifts to Jesus.]
Palo santo (Bursera graveolens), a tree species native to South America (it occurs in the Gran Chaco and it is found also in the Galapagos Islands and coastal Ecuador as well) forms tear drops of resin on the bark similar to Frankincense and has similar properties and similar effect.
Copal tree is very similar to Frankincense tree (derived from the Nahuatl language word copalli, meaning “incense”) and is found in Mexico and Central America.
Boswellia sacra from Oman is Gary’s favorite therapeutic Frankincense since he first began using it in 1996. Boswellia carterii is also very therapeutic. Boswellia frereana is very fragrant and is usually used for burning and fragrances and has little or no therapeutic value. Gary said that Frereana does have its place in the perfume industry as it is the most sweet smelling of the varieties but lacks the compounds known for therapeutic uses. Frereana is good for chewing gum. I have a sample bag of Frereana from convention and it is interesting to chew as first it breaks apart and then over time comes back together.
Young Living uses Frankincense distilleries located in Spain (George Fernando), Nairobi, Kenya (Sadqa Haq) and recently constructed a new distilling operation was established in Oman and owned by Young Living.
When the Frankincense resin is collected, it is sorted by type (carterii, sacra, etc), graded (1, 2, 3 or 4) and washed. Gary Young’s business partner Sadqa Haq makes sure that Young Living receives only the carteri grade #1 Frankincense and now sacra grade #1 for our new single Sacred Frankincense. Gary asks if you do not know who sources your frankincense resin, who sorts and grades it, who distills it, then how do you know what is in your bottle of frankincense? Sadqa mentioned that often different types and grades are distilled together because that makes the end product cheaper. It does however reduce the therapeutic qualities of the Frankincense oil.
Why are we so excited about Frankincense?

There are hundreds of studies and research that shows the therapeutic value of quality Frankincense oil and this year’s convention covered even more studies including successful clinical study of Frankincense on bladder cancer and also equine (horse) squamous cell cancer.
Frankincense, Myrrh and Balsam are known to have DNA repair properties. They also have cancer prevention properties because of the presence of alpha-pinenes, boswellic acid, and Incensol which is considered very powerful for helping those with chronic degenerative diseases.
Only Young Living produces essential oils from both Boswellia carterii (Frankincense) and Boswellia sacra (Sacred Frankincense).

Frankincense resin has a high percentage of polysaccharides, boswellic acid and incensol which are both curatives and preventives in the human body. Oman has no cancer clinic as there are not enough people there with cancer, only foreigners or native Omanis who live outside of Oman. Also, Dr Suhail, mentioned later, said that there were not many dental offices either.
HPGC – High Precision Gas Chromatograph
The longer the column on the chromatograph, the higher the resolution. YL now has a lab on the farm in Ecuador equipped with a Gas Chromatograph calibrated by Dr. Herve Casabianca from France, the leading botanical chemist in the world. This piece of technological equipment measures compounds in the essential oil. Using this method, 28 compounds were identified in Boswellia carterii and 24 compounds were identified in Boswellia sacra.
DNA Repair and RegenerationDNA repair – Frankincense, Hyssop and Idaho Balsam Fir.
If Frankincense is distilled properly, which includes correct temperature, pressure and length of time, greater than 15 hours of distillation, then the heavier molecules are extracted. One of these important molecules is Incensol Acetate.
From one of Gary’s first uses of Frankincense with cancer, he treated a person who had a tumor growing on his neck at the rate of one inch every 24 hours. This case Gary used Frankincense internally for the first time. Not only did the tumor growth stop, the tumor itself looked like it dissolved. The photos I saw showed a tumor about the size of a melon. It looked huge! The after pictures showed a normal shaped neck and shoulder but with skin discoloration in the affected area.
Regeneration of Disc, Cartilage and Bone – Frankincense.In 2009 Gary had osteophites (bone spurs) growing from his previously injured disks (logging accident, 16 broken vertebra, 11 degenerated disks) disks. The osteophites were pushing on his spinal cord producing intense pain. The doctors told him he would be in a wheelchair within 6 months and recommended surgery.
Gary was given a solution after waking up at 2am on morning. He mixed Frankincense with his own blood serum (after separation from the red blood cells) and did 17 injections into his spine and neck. He healed himself in 5 weeks and was able to travel to the YL convention in Japan. He has been pain free since. Dr Suhail reviewed the before and after x-rays taken of Gary’s back and said this healing is currently unknown in today’s medical world. (paraphrased) Actually, Dr Suhail called it a miracle.
A short film clip showed another man who was told he needed double knee replacement surgery and instead of the surgery, he traveled to NovaVita clinic in Ecuador where Gary Young’s clinic is. Here he also was treated with the new and pioneering use of essential oils by having the patient’s own blood drawn, separated, blended with Frankincense oil and then injected into the area of concern. I did not write down his name, but he is no longer in need of knee replacement surgery.
Boswellic acid which is found in Frankincense resin and oil has shown much promise in the treatment of Rheumatoid arthritis, leukemia and bladder cancer. It was also effective in reducing serum cholesterol and had strong anti-inflammatory properties.
Can be used to replace steroid treatment for anti-inflammatory properties.
Reduces cholesterol by 38%.
Other studies have shown Frankincense induces cell death (apoptosis) in leukemia cells.
Frankincense kills bladder cancer cells while not affecting healthy cells.
I also watched 60 of the 90 minutes of the documentary The Gift on Frankincense Oil. In those 60 minutes, there is a vetinarian in Virginia who used Frankincense oil and several cases of equine squamous cell carcinoma. He was extremely impressed. These are not labratory studies, but real-life application. After treatment with Frankincense oil, the tumors basically swelled up, ruptured, then healed over with no remaining evidence of the original cancer cells.

Frankincense Burner – burning frankincense resins stimulates immune system and emotions. Ancients draped clothes over the burner (placed under a 1 meter tripod) to purify and deodorize the garments. During the day the bed sheets would be draped over the burners to purify. The burner comes with a sack of frankincense resin for $29.95. This was offered at Convention only. I did purchase and have been enjoying the burner. It does smoke, but so far has not set off the smoke detector. Currently additional resin is not available, but promised. Resin is not only good in the burner, but also used as chewing gum.
